How was your first night away from home?

I had never lived in a hostel in the 18 years of my life. Never spent my night anywhere except my home and my grandmother’s house. And there I was, in a hostel room in a different country. The room I had booked had been taken by someone else, so after a lot of waiting I got the room in the corner most part of the hostel, where the corridor had no lights, the windows opened to the dirty scary back side of the hospital. My roommate would arrive only 10 days later, so I was on my own. I checked my new sim, I had already spent the balance in calling home and informing that I reached safely, including the loan amount. The data pack I purchased at the airport, hadn’t been activated yet. No phone, no internet, it felt like someone had thrown me to an island far away. I looked at the room, an empty bed, a table and a chair on my side, nothing else yet. I opened my suitcase, took out the bedsheet and began arranging my bed. I never did it in my home because mom was always there, even when she told me to do it. And there I was, nobody had to tell me to do it. I looked around the room again, looked at my phone waiting for a call, island! I tucked the bedsheet to the sides of the bed and there were tears in my eyes I could not explain. I opened the big luggage and put the blanket on my bed, tucked myself in. Suddenly, the lights went out and it was completely dark until they turned the generators on. That night, in those few minutes,I realised how much I feared darkness, the fear that persists till today. I made my bed crying aloud. Everyone else was busy fighting their own battles on their first night away, my friend was just another empty bed, I had no-one so I chose music. For the first time in my life, even music could not soothe me. I kept staring at the ceiling until I heard the sounds of prayers from the nearby mosque at 4 am. After some more hours of staring, finally the internet pack was activated and I was rescued a bit from the island.
